The new CJI NV Ramana has been administered the oath by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Justice Ramana will succeed Justice Bobde as CJI. The tenure of Justice Ramana will end on 26 August 2022.
Justice Ramana was born in an agricultural family in Andhra Pradesh. He became a lawyer in 1983 and practised before Andhra Pradesh High Court, Central and Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunals and the Supreme Court of India.
Justice Ramana is the first judge from Andhra Pradesh who has sworn in as Chief Justice of India.
He was appointed permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh HC in 2000 and was administered as Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in 2013. He was elevated as the Supreme Court Judge in 2014.
As a Supreme Court Judge, he has authored 156 Judgements in the tenure of over 7 years. He has been part of many landmark judgements where time and again he has emphasized gender equality through judgements like the grant of the permanent commission for women in the armed forces. He has also launched a campaign in 2020 as chairman of NALSA (National Legal Service Authority) to make women aware of their legal rights.
